Ferrari should not rush to sign Lewis Hamilton with Flavio Briatore saying they already have a star driver, but it is not Sebastian Vettel.
This season Ferrari brought 22-year-old Charles Leclerc into the fold, signing him as Vettel’s new team-mate.
From the get-go it was evident that there was something special about the Monégasque driver.
Leclerc would have claimed his maiden F1 grand prix win at race two, the Bahrain GP, were it not for reliability troubles dropping him to third.
Instead he had to wait until Spa to bag his first, taking his second at Monza.
But while Leclerc’s Ferrari future is secure, his team-mate Vettel is believed to be out come the end of 2020.
Ferrari has reportedly been speaking to Hamilton about the possibility of the six-time World Champion replacing the German.
Hamilton hasn’t denied it, in fact says there is “no harm” in speaking to rivals.
Briatore, though, has urged Ferrari not to be too hasty.
He told Italian news agency Adnkronos that while Hamilton is a “great driver,” he “would wait because it seems Ferrari already has a driver of Hamilton’s worth.”
Briatore, though, wasn’t speaking about Hamilton but rather Leclerc.
He added: “Having two very valuable drivers in the same team can be a risk, as we saw this year with Vettel and Leclerc.
“Let’s not forget that in the past years, given the superiority of Mercedes, Hamilton was able to drive very relaxed, almost never making mistakes.”
