Romain Grosjean is looking forward to driving “probably the best corner of the whole season” at Spa – and he doesn’t mean Eau Rouge.

The Belgian Grand Prix is a race the Frenchman admits he has a “love-hate” relationship with, but he is certainly excited about steering the Haas around Turn 12, Pouhon.

It may not be the most famous part of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, certainly compared to Eau Rouge, La Source or the Bus Stop chicane, but Pouhon is what Grosjean enjoys the most.

In a Belgian Grand Prix Q&A on the Haas official website, Grosjean gave his description of the track and said: “Obviously at Spa it’s all about the speed, you really see that.

“When you drive a Formula 1 car you go up Raidillon, reaching 300kph before you get there and then you feel like the wall’s in front of you.

“The corners are very flowing through the middle part of the track, then you’ve got Pouhon, the double-left corner which is absolutely mega. That’s probably the best corner of the whole season.

“The low-speed corners, the last turn and first turn, they are quite key for overtaking. The key is always finding the right balance between the flowing corners and those two low-speed ones.

“Every year in Spa, when I go through Eau Rouge for the first time on the weekend, I feel sick. My stomach really goes up and down, but it goes away after the first timed lap. It’s an amazing circuit.”

The reason for Grosjean’s “love-hate” relationship with this race is that it provided him with his most recent podium finish, for Lotus in 2015, but three years earlier he was fined 50,000 euro for causing a collision at the start which ended his race and also those of Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez.

He was also suspended from the next race, the Italian Grand Prix.

“Obviously a lot of people remember the start in 2012, but I’d rather remember the 2015 podium,” said Grosjean. “Taking a podium at Spa is very special.

“Everything worked to plan in the race and on that day it just felt easy – those are your best drives because everything just feels natural.”
