Robert Kubica is reportedly set to snub Haas, opting instead to sign as Racing Point’s reserve driver for the 2020 F1 season.

Declaring he won’t be a Williams driver next season after a disappointing first year back on the Formula 1 grid, Kubica went in search of a new job.

Haas and Racing Point put up their hands.

Both teams were keen on signing the Polish driver as their reserve man with Haas believed to have been leading the running, at least until now.

Although Haas team boss Gueuther Steiner made it clear he was willing to give Kubica practice outings in order to sweeten the deal, RACER is reporting that the 34-year-old is set to be tempted by Racing Point.

Senior sources at the team say no deal has been agreed but ‘they are hopeful Kubica will join the team’.

Racing Point finished seventh in this year’s World Championship and are hoping the former F1 racer winner will be the key to developing next year’s car.

As for a full-time race seat, Kubica is expected to head to the DTM series and will test for BMW at Jerez next week.

“I would like to thank BMW Motorsport for the opportunity to test at Jerez with the BMW M4 DTM,” said Kubica.

“I am already very much looking forward to the test and to getting to know the DTM race car with its turbo engine. I can well imagine a future in the DTM.

“I am looking for a new challenge, and the DTM is certainly just that. The series has a top-class field and the standard of driving is extremely high. However, we must first wait and see how I get on at the test.”
