Eddie Jordan has raised the hugely exciting – but highly unrealistic – suggestion that Lewis Hamilton should move to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen.

Hamilton, on course for a record-equalling seventh World Championship, has yet to commit his future to Mercedes beyond the end of this year, although team principal Toto Wolff does not envisage a problem regarding a contract extension.

The 35-year-old British driver has made no secret of his admiration for Ferrari which goes back to his boyhood days, but their driver line-up for 2021 is firmly set with Carlos Sainz replacing Sebastian Vettel as Charles Leclerc’s team-mate.

Verstappen is the undisputed team leader at Red Bull, although an element of doubt remains over their second seat which is currently occupied by Alex Albon.

Although Red Bull these days only put drivers who have come through their Junior Team in their race cars, that has not stopped Jordan from floating the prospect of Hamilton creating what would be one of the greatest shocks in F1 history by leaving Mercedes for their current nearest rivals.

“I personally believe Lewis should go to Red Bull and not to Ferrari,” said former team owner Jordan, speaking to Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport and quoted by Motorsport.com.

“I’ll tell you that’s perfect because… the best young driver of all in Formula 1 at the moment is Max Verstappen. There’s no question about it.

“His style, his speed, his intellect, his control on the track. Also his arrogance. And grand prix winners and grand prix champions need a level of arrogance. That’s obvious, and he has that.

“Whether he got it from (his father) Jos or whatever I have no real idea, but the facts are that he has an unbelievable talent.

“And what I believe is if he had a team-mate like Lewis Hamilton, then I do believe he would be able to beat him.”

Jordan also believes Verstappen has the capabilities to match what Hamilton is doing right now, if he is given the right car.

He added: “I think Lewis at the end of this year will be better than everybody. I have to say Lewis is on a level with Prost, Senna and Schumacher and I think he’s about to pass them – until Max gets himself sorted.

“Then once Max gets on a roll, he will be exactly the same. I don’t think Red Bull are far away. They are extremely close, and I think they haven’t really been that lucky this year.

“We saw the DNFs of Max and a few little issues, you know. Albon finished third last race. I do believe the Honda engine is the equal, or will be the equal very soon, of the Mercedes.

“So as I said to Adrian Newey ‘you have to make a better car because if you perform like I know Max can perform, then it’s a World Championship there for you to have with Red Bull’.”
